My guess is this email lands on you in as untethered a place as it does me. Who’s not experiencing that right now? It’s awfully uncomfortable. When in such doubt- I lean into my faith, because it’s about all that offsets my fears.

Starting today and for the next nine days I am participating in a daily devotional, and initiative led by a few beacons of light to my faith; Bishop Michael Curry, and the organizations of Forward Movement and Renewal Works. They remind me to lean into love, of my neighbor and nation and to do so by way of prayer. Metta meditation disciplines us to pray for our ourselves, our loved ones and our enemies. And to lean into love in the hardest of times. Especially in the hardest of times. Not easy, but essential…

Below find links to Bishop Curry’s works and words. And today’s prayer. Please join me in prayer…

October 27: Pray for the nation

Lord God Almighty, you have made all the peoples of the earth for your glory, to serve you in freedom and in peace: Give to the people of our country a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance, that we may use our liberty in accordance with your gracious will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

I’ve been praying every day since this pandemic started, and it’s been my anchor. For the first time in my life, I’ve also been calling on my ancestors when I pray, asking them to deliver us from tyrants, asking them to show us how to be stewards of the planet, asking them to help us treat our fellow human beings and all our fellow living creatures with respect. And, of course, praying for loved ones and friends who particularly need help, and the biggest prayer of all: protecting my family. I don’t think I’m ever going to give up the daily morning prayer now. It’s just too important, and yet it only takes 5 minutes. Strange how that works.
