The Peace of Wild Things

by Wendell Berry

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

“Felt the peace in wild things” as a friend and I paddled on this glorious Sunday morning through meandering streams past “herons feeding” in our collective effort to plunge in cold springs. The peaceful voyage went from calm to exhilarating the second our bodies submerged in water a few notches above freezing. Dang. That’s cold! Grateful for Sunday mornings. For showing — living — our true colors. I especially enjoyed viewing Dr. Tom’s playful ways of joining the plunge. Cheers to pure joy, to laughter, to freedom. Amen. And P.S. is it just me or is Duncan Keith showing “signs” of what Jesus may have looked like?!
